I meet every two weeks with a few brothers, who, as the saying goes, have “been around the barn.” They are good brothers and have been for years. Last week, I shared with them this startling truth that I addressed in last week’s post: “All the nations are as nothing before him, they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness” (Isaiah 40:17).1 I met with no resistance as I talked about how worthless the nations of the world are, and how I was flummoxed by the fact that not only are they nothing, but they are less than nothing. However, when I tossed the United States into the “less than nothing” box, one of them balked.

I get this. The Bible is jampacked with extraordinary truths, and they challenge us to our bones.

Here’s a biblical truth that is so “out there” that most of the Western civilization rejects it: The Lord God created all living things. When one considers the staggering diversity and beauty and complexity of created life, this is a breath-taking statement. Most do not believe that there is a Creator. Our culture has come to believe that all the glorious wonders of life were produced by evolution. This has been accepted as fact for a great many years, although there is no way to prove how the life that-of-course-evolved sprang into existence. The scientists who tout evolution have not proven that “scientific fact.” Since they haven’t and can’t, they now believe organic life came to earth via asteroids, meteorites, and comets. This is science? Have they ever found a rock that fell from space with a clump of cells wriggling on it?

Here is another truth: Not only did the Lord God create all living things, He also created everything that exists. All matter. Energy. Time. Gravity. Space. He created dark matter and energy—ninety five percent of the universe—about which scientists know nothing. The Lord created the incomprehensible reality of physics, about which physicists upon researching it, can only scratch their heads and confess, “Nothing in the world of quantum physics makes any sense. Light can be both a particle and a wave? Really?”

This God is one mind-boggling being.

Here’s another fact which an unbeliever might balk at, even laugh, perhaps uncomfortably. This Creator knows everything about us. All our thoughts. All the words we have spoken. Every sin we have committed. He knows when we will die. He knows where we will be for eternity if we do not come to Him.

However, here is the most startling truth of all: The Creator of the universe was executed like a criminal so we could know Him. In that execution, He was punished so we don’t have to be after we die. His sacrifice was prophesied centuries before Jesus lived on the earth.

“But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5).

Why would the Creator do such a thing? Because He loves us. Not just, a “Hey, love ya. You know that, right?” but a deep, soul-reaching love that we humans cannot produce.

Not only can we know this amazing, life-giving Creator God, but we can be His sons or daughters. This is a staggering truth.

We can reject these truths or accept them. Our decision has eternal consequences.

Remember, Jesus, the Creator of all things, loves us. Why reject Him or His truth?
